Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday convened a meeting with party MLAs in Kolkata to chalk out the Opposition strategy in the state Assembly following the recently concluded elections. The meeting comes at a politically sensitive time, with the party transitioning into its role as the principal opposition force in West Bengal amid administrative and legal challenges involving civic bodies.
According to party sources, around 80 elected TMC legislators are expected to attend the closed-door discussion, along with senior party leader and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee. The agenda reportedly includes organisational coordination, legislative strategy in the Assembly, and responses to what the party describes as increasing bureaucratic resistance in civic administration under the changed political environment.
The meeting is also expected to address growing tensions surrounding the functioning of municipal bodies, including the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). Officials within the civic body have recently issued notices under Section 400(1) of the KMC Act concerning alleged illegal constructions, a development that has triggered political controversy within the state’s ruling and opposition circles.

The issue has gained further attention after reports that notices were served to properties linked to Abhishek Banerjee, copies of which were reportedly pasted at multiple locations. The matter has added to the political friction between the Trinamool Congress and the current state administrative setup led by opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari, who has raised allegations related to alleged irregularities and corruption in previous administrative regimes.
In parallel, the state government has announced the formation of two separate inquiry commissions headed by retired Calcutta High Court judges to investigate cases of alleged “institutional corruption” and “crime against women.” These developments are expected to further influence the political narrative in the state and may feature in the discussions during the TMC strategy meeting.
Party insiders suggest that the meeting is aimed at consolidating internal coordination and preparing a structured response to ongoing administrative and legal challenges. The outcome is likely to shape the Trinamool Congress’ approach in the Assembly and its broader political messaging in the coming months as the party adjusts to its role in the opposition.
