West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya has said that a bill to rename the state as Paschim Banga could soon be introduced in the state Assembly. Bhattacharya made the statement on Monday while responding to a question about a proposal to establish a Paschim Banga Bhavan in Varanasi, linking the proposed name change with efforts to restore the state’s historical identity and strengthen its cultural connections.
Bhattacharya said the state government would soon bring the legislation before the Assembly, indicating that the proposal could be taken up during the ongoing session. The announcement comes in the context of renewed discussion over the official name of West Bengal and the use of Paschim Banga, a name that has previously featured in political and public debates over the state’s identity.
The BJP state president was speaking at a press conference when he was asked about plans for a Paschim Banga Bhavan in Varanasi. The proposed facility was presented in connection with the broader idea of strengthening Bengal’s cultural presence and ties outside the state. Bhattacharya linked the initiative to what he described as an effort to reconnect with the historical and cultural identity associated with Bengal.

The proposed renaming would require legislative action before any change to the state’s official name could take effect. Bhattacharya’s statement indicates that the government is preparing to bring the matter before the Assembly, although the details of the proposed bill, including its exact provisions and the legislative process that will follow, were not provided in the announcement.
The discussion around Paschim Banga also carries a cultural dimension, with Bhattacharya connecting the proposed name and the Varanasi facility to Bengal’s historical links and traditions. The Paschim Banga Bhavan proposal is intended to deepen cultural ties involving Bengal and Varanasi, while the proposed name change has been described as part of a broader effort to restore what the BJP leader considers the state’s historical identity.
The announcement places the proposed renaming of West Bengal back in focus as the state Assembly session continues. The next significant step will be the introduction of the proposed bill and the response it receives during the legislative process. Until then, the state’s official name remains West Bengal, while the BJP has indicated that legislation seeking to change it to Paschim Banga is expected soon.
