Kakinada SEZ Limited, a subsidiary of Auro Infra Realty and Infrastructure, is investing Rs 1,310 crore to establish a 3x50 MLD (150 million liters per day) desalination plant in Kona Village, Kakinada District, Andhra Pradesh. The project, aimed at addressing freshwater scarcity, received Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance from the Ministry of Forests’ Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) on June 26, with conditions to protect the marine environment.
The facility will draw 380 MLD of seawater through two intake pipelines, producing desalinated water for industries and the nearby port. An outfall pipeline will discharge 230 MLD of brine reject into the sea, with the EAC mandating a prototype for brine reuse to minimize marine pollution. The project allocates Rs 10 crore for environmental mitigation, monitoring, and protection, including collaboration with a reputed university or research institute for ongoing compliance.
By supplying industries, the plant will reduce reliance on groundwater, easing pressure on local freshwater resources. The EAC noted that any changes to the project scope will require fresh appraisal. Kakinada SEZ, spanning 5,600 acres, is a multi-sector industrial hub with port connectivity, fostering economic growth in Andhra Pradesh.
