The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Sunday appointed Tejashwi Yadav as the party’s Working President during its national executive meeting held in Patna. The decision marks a significant organisational shift for the party and reinforces Tejashwi’s central role in shaping its future political strategy.
Tejashwi Yadav’s elevation comes in the aftermath of the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan’s defeat in the recent Bihar Assembly elections, which were contested under his leadership as the chief ministerial candidate. Party leaders believe the move will help revitalise the organisation and strengthen its presence at the grassroots level.
As working president, Tejashwi Yadav will oversee key aspects of the party’s functioning, including organisational restructuring, strategic planning, and election preparedness. RJD leaders said his appointment provides clarity on the party’s leadership succession and ensures continuity in decision-making.

The decision was formally announced through a post on X by the RJD, stating that it was unanimously taken at the national executive meeting attended by party chief Lalu Prasad, Tejashwi Yadav, senior leaders, and members of the extended leadership. Tejashwi’s sister, Patliputra MP Misa Bharti, was also present at the meeting.
A former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav currently serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly. Even before the Assembly polls, Lalu Prasad had delegated most organisational and political responsibilities to him, signalling a gradual transition of authority.
Political analysts suggest that the move could significantly influence the party’s performance in upcoming Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. Known for his assertive political style and active campaigning, Tejashwi Yadav’s expanded role is expected to sharpen the RJD’s opposition strategy and intensify political competition in Bihar.
