Post-election violence erupted across West Bengal, resulting in the deaths of two political workers and injuries to several security personnel as clashes broke out between rival political groups and supporters of opposing parties. The incidents, reported from multiple districts including New Town, Birbhum, and Sandeshkhali, have triggered heightened security measures and urgent administrative intervention.
In New Town, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker identified as Madhu Mondal died on Tuesday evening following an alleged assault during a victory procession. According to reports, the incident took place in the Bhalliguri area, where clashes broke out between BJP and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters. Mondal was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival, sparking retaliatory protests and localized unrest.
In Birbhum’s Nanoor region, TMC worker Abir Sheikh was killed earlier the same day during a violent confrontation in Santoshpur village. Police said the incident followed an argument that escalated into a fatal attack. While TMC representatives accused BJP-linked individuals of involvement, opposition leaders denied the allegations and demanded a neutral investigation. The incident further intensified political tensions in the district.

Violence also spread to Sandeshkhali, where five security personnel were injured during a night patrol. According to reports, the team came under attack while monitoring sensitive areas amid rising tensions. Some accounts suggest the involvement of armed clashes and crude explosives during confrontations between rival local factions. Authorities have since increased deployments in the region to prevent further escalation.
The incidents prompted swift administrative response, with central forces deployed in multiple locations to restore order and contain unrest. Officials have begun investigations into the separate episodes of violence, while both major political parties have exchanged accusations over responsibility for the clashes and killings.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has directed state authorities to take immediate action against those involved in violence and vandalism. Security has been tightened across sensitive districts as West Bengal remains on high alert in the aftermath of the post-poll clashes.
