Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh held a bilateral meeting with Tanzania National Assembly Speaker Mussa Azzan Zungu on Tuesday on the sidelines of the 153rd International Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Arusha. The discussions focused on further strengthening parliamentary cooperation between India and Tanzania, along with capacity building and skill development. Harivansh also congratulated Zungu on Tanzania's hosting of the IPU Assembly.
The Indian High Commission in Tanzania said the two leaders discussed ways to deepen cooperation between the two parliamentary institutions. The meeting formed part of India's engagement with the 153rd IPU Assembly, which has brought parliamentarians from different countries together for discussions on governance, inclusion and community empowerment. Harivansh is leading an Indian parliamentary delegation at the assembly.
Harivansh arrived in Arusha on Sunday along with Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra and was received by India's High Commissioner to Tanzania, Bishwadip Dey. The Indian delegation includes Lok Sabha MPs Anurag Thakur, Aparajita Sarangi, Sanjay Jaiswal, Kamaljeet Sehrawat, Lata Wankhede, Bijuli Kalita Medhi and N. K. Premachandran, besides Harivansh and Patra. The delegation is participating in various meetings and discussions linked to the assembly.

The Rajya Sabha Secretariat said the IPU Assembly is being held under the theme “Enhancing good governance and empowering communities through inclusivity, trust and opportunities for all.” The Indian delegation is scheduled to participate in panel discussions, workshops and other meetings covering issues of international relevance. The engagement is intended to provide a platform for India to present its perspectives on matters concerning global governance and development.
Harivansh is also scheduled to participate in the IPU Governing Council, the General Debate, discussions on an emergency item and a hearing involving candidates for the position of IPU President. Other members of the Indian delegation will take part in sessions covering democracy and human rights, peace and international security, sustainable development, women's participation, science and technology, counter-terrorism and healthcare.
The delegation will also participate in discussions on critical minerals, artificial intelligence and the future of work, maritime security, climate change, and the protection of mountain and ocean ecosystems. The Rajya Sabha Secretariat said India's participation reflects its continued engagement with the IPU and commitment to parliamentary diplomacy, multilateral dialogue and cooperation among legislatures on issues related to peace, development, democracy and community empowerment.
