Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called for greater resilience within the BRICS grouping, stressing the importance of identifying emerging challenges in time, staying prepared and taking prompt action. Addressing the opening session of the second day of the BRICS Summit, Modi said the grouping must strengthen its ability to respond to crises that can affect countries and communities across regions.

The session was held under the theme, “Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth.” Modi said the world is witnessing a steady rise in tensions, while pandemics, climate-related disasters and disruptions to supply chains are increasingly affecting ordinary people. He stressed that these challenges require greater preparedness and coordinated action among BRICS members.

Modi pointed to the interconnected nature of the modern world, noting that a crisis in one region can have consequences beyond its immediate geographical boundaries. Against this backdrop, he said BRICS needs to develop stronger mechanisms to anticipate risks and respond effectively. Greater resilience, he argued, would help the grouping remain better prepared for emerging global challenges.

The Prime Minister said BRICS members had reached a consensus on establishing an Integrated Early Warning System focused on the prevention of and response to infectious diseases. The initiative is aimed at strengthening preparedness by helping countries identify potential health threats at an early stage and improve their ability to respond to them collectively.

Modi also highlighted the formulation of Early Warning Data Integration Guidelines for disaster management. The guidelines are intended to strengthen the use and integration of early warning information in responding to disasters. He said such mechanisms reflect the broader need for BRICS countries to improve preparedness and cooperation as they confront increasingly interconnected risks.

The Prime Minister's remarks placed resilience alongside innovation, cooperation and sustainability as key priorities for inclusive global growth. His call came as BRICS leaders gathered for the second day of the summit, with discussions focused on strengthening cooperation among member countries and addressing challenges that have an impact on economies, public health, disaster preparedness and ordinary citizens.
