India’s maritime capabilities received another boost with the delivery of an MH-60R Seahawk naval helicopter to the Indian Navy, as the United States reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening defence cooperation with New Delhi. The latest delivery, made in Kochi last week, is part of the ongoing induction of advanced multi-role helicopters that are expected to enhance the Navy’s operational readiness in the Indo-Pacific region. The US Embassy in India announced on Friday that another MH-60R Seahawk, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, had reached the Indian Navy. The embassy also confirmed that two more helicopters are expected to arrive this week, further expanding the fleet acquired under the India-US defence partnership.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor welcomed the development, describing it as an important milestone in the growing strategic relationship between the two countries. In a post on X, he said the advanced helicopter platform would strengthen maritime security and reinforce the shared commitment of India and the United States to a free, open and secure Indo-Pacific. “Excellent news for our growing U.S.-India defense partnership! Great to see this advanced capability strengthening maritime security and our shared commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Gor wrote.
The MH-60R Seahawk is regarded as one of the world's most capable multi-mission naval helicopters. Designed primarily for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW), it is also equipped to perform search and rescue, maritime surveillance, logistics support, medical evacuation and special operations missions. The helicopter significantly enhances a navy’s ability to detect, track and engage underwater and surface threats. Equipped with advanced radar systems, sonar, electronic warfare equipment and secure communication systems, the MH-60R can operate effectively from warships in diverse maritime environments.

It can carry lightweight torpedoes, anti-ship missiles and other mission-specific payloads, making it a critical asset for protecting naval task forces and monitoring strategic sea lanes. India procured the MH-60R helicopters from the United States to replace its ageing fleet and strengthen anti-submarine capabilities, particularly in the Indian Ocean Region where maritime activity has increased in recent years. The induction of these helicopters complements the Indian Navy’s broader modernisation efforts aimed at improving surveillance, deterrence and rapid-response capabilities. The deliveries also reflect the deepening defence relationship between India and the United States.
Over the past decade, the two countries have expanded military cooperation through defence agreements, joint exercises, technology transfers and major defence acquisitions. The MH-60R programme is considered one of the key projects supporting interoperability between the armed forces of both nations. With two more Seahawk helicopters expected to arrive shortly, the Indian Navy is set to further enhance its operational capabilities across the Indo-Pacific. The induction of these advanced aircraft is expected to strengthen India's maritime security architecture while reinforcing the strategic partnership between New Delhi and Washington in ensuring stability and freedom of navigation in the region.
