The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe heatwave warning for parts of Maharashtra, while also forecasting thunderstorms and rainfall across several western and coastal districts over the next five days, highlighting a sharp contrast in weather conditions across the state.

According to the latest advisory from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai, districts in the Vidarbha region, including Akola, Amravati and Wardha, are expected to experience heatwave to severe heatwave conditions through May 21. A red alert has been issued for these three districts for May 20 and 21, after which the warning will be downgraded to an orange alert until May 24.

The IMD also indicated that isolated pockets in Chandrapur, Nagpur and Yavatmal may continue to experience heatwave conditions during the same period. In addition, warm night conditions have been predicted in some areas, increasing heat stress risks for residents, particularly during early morning and nighttime hours.

In contrast, parts of coastal and western Maharashtra are expected to receive pre-monsoon activity in the form of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph. Districts such as Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are likely to see storm activity on May 20 and 21, while Kolhapur and its adjoining ghat regions may also experience similar weather conditions.

Pune and surrounding ghat areas are forecast to receive light to moderate rainfall and thundershowers between May 20 and May 22, while Raigad may witness intermittent rain over four days before conditions turn dry by May 24. Mumbai, Palghar and several districts in Marathwada are expected to remain largely dry during this period, according to the weather department.

The IMD has cautioned that thunderstorms could trigger cloud-to-ground lightning, temporary power disruptions, and damage to weak structures, along with possible crop losses due to unseasonal rainfall. Residents in affected areas have been advised to avoid prolonged exposure to heat, stay hydrated, and limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, while farmers have been urged to secure harvested crops and take precautions against strong winds and sudden weather changes.
