The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds across six districts of Tamil Nadu on Saturday, as an upper-air trough extending from coastal Andhra Pradesh to central Maharashtra continues to influence weather conditions over southern India. The system is expected to trigger widespread rainfall activity in several parts of the state, along with the Union Territories of Puducherry and Karaikal over the coming days.
According to the weather department, the upper-air trough currently extends from coastal Andhra Pradesh to central Maharashtra, passing through Telangana and adjoining regions. Meteorologists said the system is facilitating increased moisture inflow into Tamil Nadu, leading to the development of rain-bearing clouds. While the rainfall is expected to bring temporary relief from heat conditions, officials have cautioned that intense showers could cause waterlogging and localized disruptions.
On Saturday, the RMC has specifically predicted heavy rain with gusty winds in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvannamalai, and Ranipet districts. Residents in these areas have been advised to remain alert, as strong winds combined with heavy rainfall may result in traffic disruptions, falling tree branches, and temporary flooding in low-lying regions.

The weather system is also expected to influence rainfall patterns in other parts of the state in the coming days. On Sunday, heavy rain is likely over the hilly regions of Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, and Tirunelveli districts. Moderate to heavy showers are also forecast for the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, and Kanyakumari districts, indicating a widespread wet spell across southern and western Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, the weather department has issued a marine warning for fishermen along the southern Tamil Nadu coast. Strong winds with speeds of up to 60 kmph are expected over the South Tamil Nadu coastal waters, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Comorin Sea until June 30. Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into these waters during this period due to rough sea conditions and the risk of squally weather.
Authorities are closely monitoring the evolving weather situation and have urged the public to follow official advisories and stay updated through weather bulletins. Emergency services and local administrations have also been placed on alert to respond to any weather-related disruptions during the spell of heavy rainfall across the state.
