With heavy rainfall forecast for Berhampur, the Odisha government has urgently requested the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to relocate Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public meeting on September 27 to Jharsuguda. State Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari announced the proposal on Sunday, citing weather concerns that could disrupt the event originally planned in Berhampur.
Pujari, who had been overseeing preparations in Berhampur, explained that while the venue was ready, the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, necessitated a change. “We’ve proposed Jharsuguda as the alternative venue and are awaiting PMO approval, hopefully by this evening,” he told reporters. During the day, Pujari visited Jharsuguda to assess potential sites, holding discussions with district officials to ensure logistical readiness.
The IMD’s special bulletin highlighted two low-pressure systems forming over the Bay of Bengal, one expected on September 22 and another on September 25. These systems are likely to bring substantial rainfall to Berhampur and surrounding areas through September 27, posing challenges for outdoor events. Jharsuguda, less affected by the predicted weather, emerged as a safer choice.

The proposed shift underscores Odisha’s proactive approach to managing weather-related disruptions, with the state government prioritizing attendee safety and event success. District officials in Jharsuguda have already scouted potential venues to accommodate the high-profile gathering. The event, expected to draw significant crowds, is part of the Prime Minister’s engagements in the region, though specific details of the program remain undisclosed.
As Odisha braces for turbulent weather, the government’s swift response reflects the increasing importance of adapting to climate challenges. If approved, the venue change will require rapid coordination to ensure seamless arrangements in Jharsuguda, including security, infrastructure, and public access. The PMO’s decision is eagerly awaited as the state prepares for both the event and the impending rains.
