A section of the service road at IFFCO Chowk in Gurugram caved in after heavy rainfall, creating a roughly 10-foot-by-10-foot sinkhole and adding to the city’s civic problems. Officials said the collapse occurred after a master sewer line beneath or alongside the affected stretch failed, potentially causing soil erosion. The damaged section on the Delhi-Jaipur side was immediately barricaded, while traffic restrictions were imposed to prevent vehicles from entering the affected area.

The road collapse followed heavy rain that caused widespread waterlogging and severe traffic congestion across Gurugram. Several important roads and intersections were inundated, bringing traffic movement to a near standstill in some parts of the city. By Wednesday morning, flood water had receded from most affected areas, although the slow drainage and damage to civic infrastructure continued to create problems for residents and commuters.

The National Highways Authority of India closed the two service lanes near the affected section after the sinkhole appeared. NHAI officials said water had accumulated inside the cavity and that preliminary findings pointed towards a master sewer line operated by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority. Possible leakage or failure of the sewer line may have weakened the surrounding soil, eventually resulting in the road surface collapsing.

GMDA officials said a master sewer line running from Ambience Mall towards Rajiv Chowk passes beneath or alongside the service road. Bhim Arya, executive engineer at GMDA, said the incident was reported around 3 p.m., after which the damaged portion was barricaded. Repair work on the sewage line is scheduled to begin, while officials are also expected to conduct a detailed inspection to establish the exact cause of the collapse and assess the condition of the surrounding infrastructure.

The disruption has also been accompanied by water supply problems in several parts of Gurugram. Damage to important water and sewage pipelines has affected supplies to sectors including 46, 48, 49, 50, 52, 56, 57 and areas from 58 to 76, according to officials. The city had already experienced a recent disruption after a leak developed in a master pipeline near the Basai water treatment plant, while further damage during excavation work near Baani Square caused additional interruptions.

The latest incidents have highlighted the pressure on Gurugram’s drainage, water and sewage infrastructure during periods of heavy rainfall. Authorities are now working to repair the collapsed sewer line and restore normal traffic movement around IFFCO Chowk while assessing the wider impact of the damage. The GMDA has said efforts will be made to complete the repair work at the earliest, with the detailed inspection expected to provide further clarity on the sewer-line failure and the resulting road subsidence.
