Nepali doctors attending a two-day dental convention in Gorakhpur, which concluded on Sunday, described the recent Gen-Z-led protests in their country as a pivotal and transformative movement that has ushered in hope for a better future. Despite initial fears of violence and curfews that nearly derailed their participation, the doctors expressed optimism about Nepal’s path forward, highlighting the protests’ role in challenging systemic corruption and sparking governmental change.
Professor Hemant Kumar Halwai, a guest speaker from Nepal, shared his experience with PTI: “Just four or five days ago, the situation in Nepal was chaotic, with escalating violence and curfews. We doubted we could make it to Gorakhpur. But as calm was restored, we managed to attend.” Originally, 40–50 Nepali students were slated to join, but safety concerns limited the group to six. Halwai emphasized the significance of the convention, which brought together over 1,000 doctors from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Nepal to exchange expertise and foster collaboration in dental care.
Dr. Rajan Kumar Das reflected on the broader impact of the protests, stating, “Corruption has long plagued Nepal, but the Gen-Z movement has driven meaningful change. Yes, there was arson and violence, but revolutions often come with sacrifice.” He noted that the protests, though turbulent, were a necessary catalyst for addressing longstanding governance issues.

Dr. Shrijana Thapa Ghahi echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the unsettling nature of the unrest but celebrating its outcomes. “The violence was disturbing, but it paved the way for a new government. Fear has ended, and better days are ahead,” she said, expressing hope that the movement’s momentum will lead to lasting reforms. The protests, largely driven by Nepal’s youth, have been credited with pressuring the government to address public grievances, culminating in significant political shifts.
The Gorakhpur convention provided a platform for these doctors to not only discuss advancements in dentistry but also reflect on the socio-political changes reshaping Nepal. The event underscored the resilience of the medical community, who, despite logistical challenges posed by the unrest, prioritized cross-border collaboration. Discussions covered cutting-edge dental techniques, public health strategies, and the role of technology in improving patient care, with Nepali delegates contributing valuable insights from their experiences.
As Nepal navigates its post-protest landscape, the doctors’ participation in the convention symbolizes a bridge between nations and a shared commitment to progress. Their presence in Gorakhpur highlights the power of professional unity in overcoming adversity, offering a glimpse of optimism for Nepal’s future as its youth continue to drive change.
