Former DMK Erode Central district secretary Thoppu Venkatachalam, also known as N.D. Venkatachalam, has announced his decision to quit the party days after being removed from his organisational post. He made the announcement while addressing reporters at Perundurai. Venkatachalam said he would formally communicate his resignation from the DMK’s primary membership to the party leadership. His departure comes amid changes within the party’s organisational structure in Erode.

Venkatachalam said he was grateful to the DMK leadership for giving him the responsibility of serving as the Central district secretary. However, he said his experiences within the party had caused him considerable mental anguish and made it difficult for him to continue. He described his decision as a result of the bitter experiences he had faced during his time in the organisation. He did not indicate in his remarks what his political plans would be after leaving the DMK.

Before joining the DMK, Venkatachalam was associated with the AIADMK and had served as a Minister in the erstwhile AIADMK government. His political career has therefore included senior responsibilities in both of Tamil Nadu’s major Dravidian parties. His decision to leave the DMK is significant in the Erode region, where he has maintained a political presence over the years. The resignation could draw attention to the party’s organisational dynamics in the district.
