Delhi witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall on Friday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing weather alerts for several parts of the national capital. The department issued a red alert for some regions, while orange and yellow alerts were issued for other areas, warning residents of heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning activity. At around 9:15 am, the IMD issued a red alert for south-eastern parts of Delhi, indicating the possibility of intense rainfall in the region.
An orange alert was issued for south-west Delhi and the central parts of the city, while northern areas were placed under a yellow alert. The alerts remained applicable until around noon, according to the weather agency. The IMD’s orange alert indicates the possibility of very heavy rainfall ranging between 115 mm and 204 mm. The weather department advised residents to remain cautious as thunderstorms, lightning and heavy showers were expected across multiple parts of the city. Several areas of Delhi received rainfall late on Thursday night and during the early hours of Friday.
According to rainfall data recorded between 11:30 pm on Thursday and 8:30 am on Friday, Chattarpur recorded the highest rainfall at 3.5 mm. Safdarjung, the city’s official weather station, recorded 3.4 mm of rainfall during the same period. Other areas also reported rainfall, with Palam receiving 2.3 mm, Narela recording 2 mm, and Mayur Vihar and Janakpuri receiving 0.5 mm each. The showers brought some relief from humid weather conditions but also raised concerns about possible waterlogging and traffic disruptions in low-lying areas.

The IMD forecast stated that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy rain were likely over several parts of Delhi, including South East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi and North West Delhi. The weather department also predicted moderate rainfall in several parts of the city, along with light thunderstorms in central, north-east, north-west and northern areas of Delhi. Authorities advised people to stay updated with weather alerts and take necessary precautions during periods of intense rainfall and lightning activity. Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘satisfactory’ category despite the rainy conditions.
The rainfall is expected to help temporarily improve air quality by reducing dust particles and pollutants in the atmosphere. The civic authorities have remained on alert to deal with rain-related challenges, including waterlogging, traffic congestion and emergency situations. Residents have been advised to exercise caution while travelling, especially during heavy showers and thunderstorms. The IMD will continue monitoring weather conditions in Delhi and surrounding areas, with further updates expected based on rainfall intensity and movement of weather systems.
