Delhi on Wednesday launched 56 dedicated women-only electric bus services aimed at working women and college students travelling during the city's busiest commuting hours. The new services will operate during morning and evening peak periods and are designed to provide women with additional public transport options while strengthening safety measures during daily travel. The new services comprise 30 Ladies Special trips operating across 15 high-demand routes and 26 University Ladies Special, known as U-Spl, trips covering 13 routes. The two categories are intended to address different commuter requirements, with the University Ladies Special services focusing particularly on routes used by college students.
The services will operate when demand from office-goers and students is at its highest. The rollout took place alongside the flagging off of 200 new electric buses at the Delhi University Sports Complex. Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta jointly flagged off the buses. With the addition of the new vehicles, Delhi's electric bus fleet has crossed 5,000, marking another expansion of the capital's electric public transport network. Safety is a central feature of the women-only services. Women police personnel and Home Guards have been deployed on board the Ladies Special buses, according to the Delhi government.
The services will also be operated by female staff, providing women commuters with dedicated transport supported by additional security personnel during peak travel periods. The buses are equipped with panic buttons connected directly to the Delhi Police's 112 emergency response system. The emergency facility is intended to enable passengers or staff to alert authorities quickly if they encounter a serious safety concern while travelling. The presence of women police personnel and Home Guards is also intended to create a visible security presence on the dedicated services.

The decision to introduce the services during peak hours reflects the commuting patterns of large sections of Delhi's working and student population. Morning and evening periods typically see high passenger volumes as people travel to workplaces, colleges and other destinations. By assigning dedicated women-only trips to high-demand routes, authorities aim to provide an additional option for female commuters during these busy periods. The launch also forms part of Delhi's broader expansion of electric public transport. With the city's electric bus fleet now exceeding 5,000 vehicles, the latest addition combines fleet expansion with a service specifically designed around women's mobility and safety.
The dedicated services are expected to provide an alternative for women who may face concerns about overcrowding or safety on regular public transport. For commuters, the 56 services consist of 30 Ladies Special trips on 15 routes and 26 University Ladies Special trips on 13 routes. The services will run during the morning and evening peak hours, while security personnel and emergency response facilities will be available on board. The initiative will now be monitored through its operation across the designated routes as authorities assess passenger demand and the effectiveness of the women-only services.
