Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by Tarique Rahman, has congratulated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on its victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, while simultaneously raising the long-pending issue of the Teesta river water-sharing agreement between India and Bangladesh.
In a statement following the election results, the BNP extended formal congratulations to the BJP leadership for securing a decisive mandate in West Bengal. The message, however, also carried a diplomatic undertone, urging progress on the Teesta water-sharing pact, which has remained unresolved for years despite multiple rounds of bilateral discussions.
The Teesta river dispute has been a key point of contention between India and Bangladesh, with Dhaka seeking a more equitable distribution of water during the lean season. The agreement has faced delays largely due to political sensitivities in West Bengal, where state-level concerns over water availability have historically influenced negotiations.

By linking its congratulatory message with the Teesta issue, the BNP signalled its intention to keep the matter on the diplomatic agenda, particularly at a time when political changes in West Bengal could potentially alter the dynamics of decision-making on the Indian side.
The development also reflects the BNP’s broader foreign policy positioning, as it seeks to highlight bilateral issues with India while remaining engaged with regional political developments. The party has often emphasised the importance of safeguarding Bangladesh’s water rights in transboundary river agreements.
Observers note that while the BJP’s electoral victory in West Bengal may open new political possibilities, any progress on the Teesta agreement would still require coordination between the central government and the state leadership, making the path forward complex despite renewed calls for resolution.
