Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to chair the 73rd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong on Thursday, bringing together top political leaders and officials from across the eight northeastern states to review development priorities and regional policy coordination. The meeting is expected to focus on strengthening infrastructure, improving connectivity, and accelerating socio-economic development in the strategically important region.
The plenary session will also be attended by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) and Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia, who serves as the Vice-Chairman of the NEC. Governors and Chief Ministers of all eight northeastern states are expected to participate, making it one of the most significant annual gatherings for regional planning and coordination under the 55-year-old council.
Ahead of the plenary, preparations across northeastern states have been reviewed at multiple administrative levels to ensure that key developmental concerns are effectively presented. In Mizoram, Governor General (Retd) Dr. Vijay Kumar Singh held a review meeting in Aizawl, where he emphasised the Centre’s continued commitment to the region’s development and urged departments to highlight state-specific priorities during the NEC discussions.

Officials in Mizoram also reviewed progress on decisions taken during the previous NEC plenary held in Agartala in December 2024. A detailed presentation was made on ongoing projects under various central schemes, including NEC-funded initiatives, NESIDS (Roads), NESIDS (OTRI), and PM-DevINE. These programmes are aimed at improving infrastructure, boosting connectivity, and supporting economic growth across the northeastern states.
The review meeting also involved discussions on key proposals to be placed before the upcoming plenary session. Senior officials examined sectoral priorities related to infrastructure development, governance, and socio-economic welfare, with the objective of ensuring that Mizoram’s developmental requirements are adequately represented in the regional forum.
The North Eastern Council, established over five decades ago, serves as a key platform for coordinated planning among northeastern states and the central government. According to officials, the Shillong plenary is expected to reinforce collaborative efforts aimed at sustainable development, with a particular emphasis on improving connectivity and accelerating long-term regional growth.
