Shilpa Rao has shared her views on staying authentic in the music industry amid recent debate surrounding comments made by A. R. Rahman about receiving fewer opportunities in Hindi Cinema. Speaking at a recent edition of Expresso by SCREEN in Mumbai, the National Award-winning singer said artists should avoid blindly believing narratives created around them and instead remain true to themselves.
Over recent months, the Hindi film music industry has seen several high-profile discussions that sparked concern among fans. Reports about Arijit Singh stepping away from playback singing and Rahman’s remarks about reduced opportunities led to wider conversations about changing power structures and fairness within the industry. In that context, Shilpa offered a broader perspective on how artists should respond.
She said people should “abstain from being gullible” and avoid listening to every narrative or pressure around them. According to Shilpa, it is important for artists to think independently and not simply follow industry trends or expectations. Her remarks suggested that maintaining clarity and self-belief is essential in a competitive and often unpredictable environment.

The singer also admitted that choosing authenticity can come at a professional cost. She said artists may lose projects, songs or short-term opportunities when they refuse to conform. However, she believes the bigger picture matters more than immediate gains and that long-term identity is more valuable than temporary success.
Shilpa explained that if given a choice between a safe, ordinary song and a bold, expressive track that reflects her real personality, she would choose the second option. Even if such a choice fails commercially, she said it is better to fail while being genuine than succeed with something uninspiring. Her comments have resonated with many who see them as a call for artistic courage and individuality.
