The Congress party is reportedly preparing for a major leadership change in Karnataka, with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar set to replace Chief Minister Siddaramaiah after receiving approval from the party’s central leadership, according to sources. The development signals a possible resolution to the prolonged power-sharing tensions within the Karnataka unit of the Congress following its decisive victory in the 2023 Assembly elections. While no official announcement has been made, internal discussions suggest a transition plan is now actively underway.
Sources indicate that Siddaramaiah may step down around May 28 and could subsequently be accommodated in the Rajya Sabha as part of a broader political adjustment strategy. The move is being seen as an attempt by the Congress high command to balance leadership ambitions while maintaining unity within the state leadership. Party insiders suggest that the arrangement aims to ensure a smooth transfer of power without triggering internal instability or public confrontation between the two senior leaders.
A key meeting involving Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader Rahul Gandhi, Siddaramaiah, and Shivakumar was held in New Delhi on Tuesday. Although official statements downplayed speculation about a leadership change, sources claim that the discussions focused on finalising a structured transition plan. The leadership is also reportedly considering appointing multiple Deputy Chief Ministers to accommodate caste and regional representation, including leaders from Dalit, Minority, Lingayat, and OBC communities.

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal publicly dismissed reports of a leadership change, stating that the discussions were limited to Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections. However, internal sources suggest that Rahul Gandhi played a decisive role in pushing for an agreement, reportedly emphasising that party decisions needed to be implemented in a coordinated manner. It is also believed that Siddaramaiah has been assured of continued influence in key cabinet decisions and future political planning within the state.
The leadership transition discussions are taking place alongside preparations for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Karnataka, scheduled for June 18. The Congress is expected to win three of the four available seats, while the BJP may secure one. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge is expected to be re-elected to the Upper House, while Shivakumar’s brother DK Suresh is also being considered for a nomination, along with other candidates representing different social groups.
If finalised, the change would mark one of the most significant political shifts in Karnataka since the Congress returned to power in 2023. The transition is being closely watched within political circles, as it could reshape the balance of power within the state Congress unit and influence the party’s strategy ahead of future elections.
