OpenAI is preparing to bring its immensely popular Sora app to Android devices soon, expanding its reach beyond the iOS ecosystem. The San Francisco-based AI company first launched Sora on iPhones, quickly capturing global attention by offering users the ability to generate AI-powered videos of themselves and others. The Android rollout marks a major step, giving millions more the opportunity to experience OpenAI’s advanced Sora 2 model — even without a ChatGPT subscription.
Bill Peebles, Head of Sora at OpenAI, confirmed the development in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that “the Android version of Sora is actually coming soon.” His statement hints that the launch could occur within the next few weeks. However, early access might remain invite-only, similar to the app’s iOS launch, which achieved a million downloads within five days despite regional and invitation restrictions.
A listing for Sora has already appeared on the Google Play Store, allowing users in select countries to pre-register for the release. Notably, the pre-registration option is not yet available in India, suggesting that OpenAI may initially limit access to North American users.

In addition to the Android expansion, OpenAI is enhancing Sora with new creative and social tools. Users will soon be able to feature pets, objects, and AI-generated characters through an upgraded Cameo feature. The app is also gaining its first editing tool — a stitching option that lets users merge multiple clips into longer videos.
Further improvements aim to strengthen community engagement within Sora. Instead of the single global feed currently available, OpenAI plans to introduce community-specific channels for universities, workplaces, sports clubs, and more — a move designed to make the platform more personal and socially dynamic.
