Google is working on a redesigned notification permission system for Chrome on Android aimed at reducing interruptions and improving the browsing experience. The company has announced that the updated notification interface will begin rolling out with Chrome 155, introducing a less intrusive approach that allows users to decide more comfortably whether they want to receive alerts from websites.
According to Google, the new notification experience is designed to address notification prompt fatigue, a common issue where users are repeatedly asked to allow website notifications. The company said the updated interface maintains a similar level of understanding for users while significantly reducing friction during browsing. The goal is to help users make more informed choices without interrupting their online activity.
The redesigned system introduces a dedicated notification subscription option within Chrome’s Site Controls menu. This will allow users who ignore an initial website notification request to return later and manually subscribe if they choose. Google said the change provides users with greater flexibility by separating permission decisions from immediate browsing interactions.

The company has also confirmed that the new non-blocking notification prompt will automatically expire if users do not respond. Google advised developers to review how their websites check notification permissions and make necessary adjustments to ensure compatibility with the updated system. The change is expected to encourage websites to adopt more user-friendly approaches when requesting notification access.
Google has recommended that developers avoid showing notification permission requests immediately after a webpage loads and instead connect them to relevant user actions. The company suggested examples such as e-commerce websites requesting permission for delivery updates after an order is placed, news platforms offering topic alerts after users read related stories, and travel websites asking for fare alert permissions after a flight search.
The update is part of Google’s broader effort to improve user control and reduce unwanted interruptions across its platforms. With Chrome 155 for Android, users will have more control over website notifications while developers are encouraged to create more meaningful and context-based permission requests.
