World number one Jannik Sinner and second seed Alexander Zverev advanced to the Madrid Open final after winning their respective semi-final matches on Friday. Sinner defeated France’s Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-4, while Zverev later overcame Belgium’s Alexander Blockx 6-2, 7-5. The highly anticipated final will now feature the tournament’s top two seeds battling for one of the biggest clay-court titles of the season.
Sinner continued his remarkable run of form by claiming his 22nd consecutive victory. The Italian star is now chasing a record fifth straight Masters 1000 title and enters the final as the clear favourite. With Spanish rival Carlos Alcaraz sidelined through injury, Sinner has strengthened his hold on the men’s tour and remains the dominant player heading into the final stages of the clay season.
Against Fils, Sinner took control early by breaking serve in the third game before adding another break soon after. His powerful baseline game and consistency proved too much for the young Frenchman in the opening set. Although Fils raised his level in the second set and produced stronger resistance, Sinner remained composed and secured the decisive break late in the match before serving out victory.

After the match, Sinner admitted the packed schedule had created some physical fatigue, though he said mentally he remained in a strong place. He noted that frequent matches are also a positive sign because they reflect continued success deep into tournaments. Reaching another major final adds further momentum to a season already filled with significant titles and milestones.
In the second semi-final, Zverev looked sharp in the opening set as he dominated Blockx with aggressive serving and clean groundstrokes. However, the Belgian fought hard in the second set, repeatedly saving break points and forcing the German into a longer contest. Zverev eventually found the crucial break at 6-5 and then closed out the match to book his first final appearance of the season.
The German, a former Madrid champion in 2018 and 2021, praised Sinner after the match and described him as the best player in the world at present. Zverev said he hopes to make life more difficult for the Italian in Sunday’s final. With both players in strong form, the championship clash promises to be one of the standout contests of the tournament.
