Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez congratulated the national football team after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time to win the FIFA World Cup 2026 title. Celebrating the victory on social media, Sanchez praised the squad for bringing the World Cup back to Spain, describing the triumph as a proud moment for the country. The victory marked Spain's second men's FIFA World Cup title and its first since lifting the trophy in 2010.

In a post on X, Sanchez wrote, "WE ARE WORLD CHAMPIONS!! Huge our National Team! Thanks, team." His message came shortly after the final whistle as celebrations erupted across Spain following La Roja's successful World Cup campaign. The team completed the tournament unbeaten, conceding only one goal in eight matches while overcoming defending champions Argentina in the championship match.

The decisive moment came in the 106th minute when substitute Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the final with a powerful strike past Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. The goal secured a historic victory for Spain and ended Argentina's hopes of retaining the World Cup title won in Qatar in 2022. The defeat also marked the end of another memorable World Cup campaign for Lionel Messi, who had previously led Argentina to Copa America triumphs in 2021 and 2024.

Spain's success was built on a strong collective effort throughout the tournament. Midfielder Rodri controlled matches from the centre of the pitch, while Mikel Oyarzabal finished among the competition's leading scorers with five goals. Goalkeeper Unai Simon produced a series of outstanding performances to claim the Golden Glove award, and 19-year-old Lamine Yamal celebrated the biggest achievement of his career by adding a World Cup title to his growing list of honours.

Torres' winning strike also earned him a place in World Cup history. He became only the fifth substitute to score in a men's FIFA World Cup final and the first since Mario Gotze netted Germany's extra-time winner against Argentina in the 2014 final. Torres also became only the second Barcelona player, after Andres Iniesta, to score in a World Cup final for Spain.

Spain's route to the title included victories over Saudi Arabia, Uruguay, Austria, Portugal, Belgium and France before defeating Argentina in the final. The champions dominated possession during the title match and restricted Argentina to just one shot on target. Argentina's challenge became even more difficult after Enzo Fernandez was sent off in extra time following a second yellow card, allowing Spain to close out the contest and reclaim football's biggest prize after a 16-year wait.
