Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday gifted Russian President Vladimir Putin a Russian translation of the Thirukkural, the celebrated Tamil classic attributed to poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar, on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit. The gift highlighted India's cultural heritage during an engagement between the two leaders as New Delhi and Moscow seek to further strengthen their longstanding strategic partnership. The Thirukkural is one of Tamil literature's most influential works and is widely regarded as a text dealing with ethics, morality, governance, love and the conduct of everyday life.

Composed by Thiruvalluvar, the classic consists of 1,330 couplets organised into 133 chapters. Its themes have given the work a wide international reach, with translations available in several languages. By presenting Putin with a Russian-language edition, Modi brought an important work of India's Tamil literary tradition into the bilateral diplomatic setting. Gifts exchanged between leaders during high-level meetings often carry cultural significance, and the choice of the Thirukkural provided a link between India's regional literary heritage and its relationship with Russia.

The Russian translation also makes the work more accessible to Russian-speaking readers. The gesture came as India and Russia continued efforts to broaden their strategic partnership beyond traditional areas of cooperation. The relationship between the two countries has historically included close engagement in areas such as defence, energy, trade and diplomacy.
