Brazilian superstar Neymar has hinted that he might retire from professional football by the end of 2026, as he focuses on overcoming ongoing injury challenges and preparing for the FIFA World Cup later this year. The 34-year-old forward, who recently returned to Santos after successful spells at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, revealed that this year is pivotal for both his club and country.
Having undergone surgery for a persistent knee issue in December 2025, Neymar emphasized his commitment to regaining full fitness. “I wanted to come back at 100% this season, which is why I was rested for some matches,” he explained, acknowledging the careful management plan Santos implemented to ensure his recovery without rushing back into action.
Neymar’s contract with Santos has been extended through the end of 2026, allowing him to continue his career on home soil as he aims to secure a spot on Brazil’s World Cup squad. Despite not playing for the national team since October 2023, the country’s coach Carlo Ancelotti is closely monitoring Neymar’s progress ahead of the tournament.

Brazil will open their 2026 World Cup campaign against Morocco on June 13 at MetLife Stadium, followed by matches against Haiti and Scotland in Philadelphia and Miami, respectively. Neymar, Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals in 128 appearances, remains focused on fitness and performance while leaving his long-term future undecided.
As Neymar put it, “I don’t know what the future holds; my instincts will decide. One day at a time.” His fans will keenly watch his journey, hoping to see the star shine at one last World Cup before potentially bidding farewell to the beautiful game.
