Kolkata Knight Riders have slipped into a worrying slump in IPL 2026, with their fourth defeat exposing deeper structural issues within the squad. The team currently sits at the bottom of the points table, raising serious concerns about leadership and overall balance. While comparisons with past poor seasons exist, the current situation highlights a lack of direction. Much of the criticism has centred on captain Ajinkya Rahane, whose approach appears misaligned with modern T20 demands. The struggles suggest problems that go beyond just form.
At the top, KKR’s batting lacks the explosive firepower needed in the powerplay. Rahane has been consistent but not aggressive enough to dominate early overs. Despite a strike rate of 152, he has failed to provide impactful starts. Alongside him, Finn Allen has shown flashes of intent but lacks consistency. His 81 runs in five matches reflect underwhelming returns despite a high strike rate. As a result, the top order has failed to either anchor innings or build momentum.
The instability at the top has affected the middle order, where roles remain unclear. Rinku Singh, known for finishing games, has not delivered this season. Team management has experimented with positions, including pushing Cameron Green down to No. 6. However, Green has historically performed best in the top order. This reshuffling reflects a lack of planning and clarity in strategy. The middle order continues to struggle with consistency and defined roles.

Green’s performance has drawn particular scrutiny given his high price tag. Bought for Rs 25.2 crore, he has yet to justify expectations with either bat or ball. His bowling role has been inconsistent, and he has rarely completed full quotas in T20s. With the bat, he has not delivered match-winning performances. Comparisons with former all-rounder Andre Russell only highlight the gap further. His underperformance has become symbolic of KKR’s broader issues.
KKR’s auction decisions have also come under the spotlight. The release of key players like Russell and Shreyas Iyer has weakened the squad’s core. Additionally, letting go of Phil Salt, who has since excelled elsewhere, appears costly. These moves have resulted in a lack of stability and match-winning depth. The current squad struggles to replicate the balance seen in previous seasons. Poor planning at auctions is now affecting on-field results.
The bowling attack has been equally concerning, particularly due to the absence of a lead pacer. Injuries to Harshit Rana and Akash Deep have weakened the unit. The unavailability of Matheesha Pathirana has further compounded the problem. Without experienced pace options, KKR have struggled in both controlling runs and closing innings. The lack of a reliable death bowler has been particularly damaging. Overall, the bowling unit lacks consistency and depth.
With upcoming fixtures approaching, Rahane has acknowledged the need for change. However, unless the team quickly addresses its strategic and selection issues, recovery may become difficult. The combination of weak top-order performance, unclear roles, and ineffective bowling has created a challenging situation. KKR now faces a crucial phase in the tournament. Without immediate improvement, their campaign risks slipping beyond recovery.
