As Iran prepares for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, members of its national football team have acknowledged that ongoing geopolitical tensions and conflict are weighing heavily on their preparations. The squad is currently in a training camp in Turkey, where players have described the situation as emotionally and mentally challenging ahead of the global tournament.
Two Iranian players, speaking in interviews during the camp in Antalya, said that the broader situation in their country has inevitably affected the team’s focus. Midfielder Saeid Ezatolahi, who is set to feature in his third World Cup, said that while experienced players may be better equipped to handle external pressures, the circumstances remain difficult for the squad as a whole.
He noted that players are closely following developments back home, adding that the political and security situation inevitably influences their mental state. Despite this, he emphasised that the team is trying to stay focused on football and prepare as professionally as possible for the tournament.

Ezatolahi also highlighted the added pressure of playing in front of large Iranian diaspora communities expected to attend matches in the United States, where Iran will play its group-stage games. He said the presence of fans could increase expectations, but also serve as motivation for the squad to perform well and represent their country positively on the world stage.
Another squad member, Mohammad Ghorbani, who is preparing for his first World Cup appearance, echoed similar sentiments. He said that while the team is aware of the difficulties faced by people in Iran, the players see it as their responsibility to focus on their performance and bring pride to supporters through their results on the pitch.
The team has been based in Turkey for more than two weeks, using the Antalya coastal region as its primary training location. Reports indicate that logistical arrangements, including visa processes, have required adjustments to the team’s original plans, with the squad later set to travel to Mexico for further preparations. Iran is scheduled to play its group-stage matches in the United States, including fixtures in Los Angeles and Seattle.
The team’s participation comes amid a complex political backdrop, with international tensions continuing to shape the environment around its preparations. Despite the challenges, players have expressed a collective determination to remain united and focused. Both Ezatolahi and Ghorbani stressed that the team’s objective is to represent Iran with pride and deliver strong performances for supporters at home and abroad.
