South Africa have been dealt a potential blow ahead of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, with all-rounder Donovan Ferreira facing uncertainty after suffering a serious shoulder injury during the ongoing SA20 league. The tournament, set to begin next month in India and Sri Lanka, could see the Proteas without one of their most versatile squad members if the injury proves severe.
Ferreira sustained the injury while fielding for Joburg Super Kings in a crucial SA20 clash against Pretoria Capitals. Attempting to stop a boundary on the final ball of the innings, he dived full length but landed awkwardly on his left shoulder. Although he attempted to bat, Ferreira faced just one delivery before retiring hurt, visibly uncomfortable.
Speaking after the match, Ferreira admitted he was “not feeling good” and confirmed he would undergo scans. Subsequent reports have indicated that he suffered a fracture, effectively ruling him out of the remainder of the SA20 season. His absence is a significant setback for Joburg Super Kings, who remain in contention for a playoff spot and must win their final league match to qualify.

The injury also complicates South Africa’s World Cup selection plans. Ferreira was included in the squad as a lower-order finisher, backup wicketkeeper, and part-time bowler, offering valuable balance to the side. Potential replacements include Ryan Rickelton, who has been in outstanding form in the SA20, as well as Matthew Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs, though consistency remains a concern.
South Africa are already managing multiple fitness and selection issues ahead of the global tournament. Tony de Zorzi is returning from a hamstring injury sustained in December, while selectors have faced criticism for overlooking SA20’s leading wicket-taker Ottneil Baartman. Drawn in Group D alongside Afghanistan, Canada, New Zealand, and the UAE, South Africa will open their campaign on February 9 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, with squad fitness now a growing concern.
