Former England spinner Graeme Swann has said that young Indian batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could emerge as a major challenge for England in the upcoming T20I series, describing the teenager as a rare talent despite his lack of international experience. Swann’s comments come amid growing discussion over whether Sooryavanshi should be handed his India debut following a series of strong performances at the domestic and IPL level.
Sooryavanshi, who is yet to make his senior India debut, has become one of the most closely watched young cricketers in the country. With India preparing for a high-profile T20I series against England, debates have intensified over team selection, especially after India’s recent loss to Ireland raised questions about squad composition and form. Many observers believe the teenager’s aggressive batting style could offer India a fresh option at the top of the order.
Swann said England will find it difficult to prepare for a player like Sooryavanshi, noting that while there is limited international footage available, the batter’s exposure in the IPL provides some insight into his game. Speaking on JioStar, he added that some England bowlers may already have faced him in franchise cricket, which could help in planning, but stressed that dismissing him has been a challenge for most opponents so far.

“It’s hard to prepare for a player like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He is still new to international cricket, but he has already played two IPL seasons. That means there is video footage available. Some of the England bowlers may have bowled to him in the IPL. But the truth is, no one has really had much success against him so far. He has looked almost unplayable,” Swann said.
The former spinner’s remarks reflect the growing reputation Sooryavanshi has built through his fearless batting and ability to dominate bowling attacks at a young age. His performances in the IPL have drawn attention from pundits and former players alike, many of whom see him as one of India’s most promising emerging talents.
As India prepares for the England series, the spotlight is expected to remain on team selection decisions and whether the management chooses to introduce fresh faces like Sooryavanshi. While he is yet to earn his first international cap, the continued endorsements from former players suggest that expectations around his potential are steadily rising ahead of a crucial phase in India’s T20 plans.
