Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), fresh off back-to-back IPL title victories, have sparked speculation over future leadership plans after the franchise dropped strong hints about a potential successor to current captain Rajat Patidar. While Patidar has guided the team successfully in recent seasons, attention is already turning toward the next generation of leadership within the squad.
The focus of discussion has shifted to young batter Devdutt Padikkal, who enjoyed a standout IPL 2026 campaign for RCB. Batting at No. 3, Padikkal scored 464 runs in 15 innings at an impressive strike rate of 168.72, playing a key role in maintaining momentum after explosive starts from openers Phil Salt and Virat Kohli. His consistent performances in both the powerplay and middle overs were seen as crucial to RCB’s successful title defence.
RCB Director of Cricket Mo Bobat praised Padikkal’s evolution as a player, highlighting his willingness to adapt and embrace a more aggressive batting approach. Speaking in the franchise’s documentary “RCB’s Trophy Quest,” Bobat noted that the team had specifically asked Padikkal to increase his intent and impact, a request the young batter responded to effectively throughout the season.

Beyond his batting contributions, Bobat also pointed to Padikkal’s leadership qualities, suggesting he possesses the temperament and game awareness needed for a future captain. He described the 25-year-old as “leaderful” and hinted that he could emerge as a strong leadership option for the franchise in the coming years.
Further reinforcing this sentiment, RCB mentor and batting coach Dinesh Karthik lauded Padikkal’s maturity and understanding of match situations, emphasising his strong connection to Bengaluru and his ability to represent the team’s identity. Karthik noted that Padikkal’s familiarity with the franchise and city culture makes him a natural fit within the squad’s long-term plans.
While Rajat Patidar continues to lead the side effectively, discussions around succession appear to be gaining momentum within the franchise setup. With Padikkal still only 25 and entering what is expected to be the peak phase of his career, RCB’s internal endorsement has fuelled speculation that he could eventually take over leadership duties in the future, shaping the next chapter of the team’s IPL journey.
