With a personality like his, Ravichandran Ashwin cannot escape scrutiny.
The legendary offie, who is back with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) with whom his career zoomed around 2010, seems to be in the cross hairs of both critics and fans. CSK has lost two of its three games in the IPL so far and looks to be an early contender to be among the teams to not make the cut as its performances have been lacklustre.
Ashwin, who was bought by CSK for Rs 9.75 crore in the December mega auction, has struggled to pick wickets and maintain his reputation as an economical bowler. In the first three matches, in this spin-heavy side (Jadeja and Afghan Noor being the other spinners), Ashwin has taken only three wickets while conceding runs at an economy rate of 9.90.
With calls for major changes in the team, Ashwin finds himself in an unenviable situation. Fans and some former cricketers turned commentators want him to be dropped for CSK's next fixture (against DC on April 5 at Chepauk) and some youngster like medium-pacer Anshul Kambhoj be blooded in his place.
Meanwhile, with Ashwin's performances under the microscope, his YouTube channel, which also reviews the IPL matches every night is also drawing negative comments.
As he is away with the team, the matches on YT channel are being reviewed by former CSK and TN player Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan and Pdogg. The latter is the screen name for Prasanna Agoram, a well-known cricket data and video analyst, who had worked with the South Africa national cricket team and franchise teams across the globe.
These two reviewers have castigated CSk for its poor show so far and also have called for wholesome changes in the team. But they have not made bold to train their eyes on Ashwin's performance, and have not spoken whether he has to be dropped from the team or not.
Social media platforms are agog with trolls outraging over their selective criticism. But with IPL, such issues are normal, aren't?
