Indian Premier League 2026 saw Shubman Gill express disappointment after Gujarat Titans suffered a narrow defeat to Punjab Kings in their opening match. The skipper admitted that his side failed to capitalise during the crucial final overs, which ultimately cost them the game despite a competitive start.
Batting first, Gujarat Titans posted 162 for 6, a total Gill later described as below par for the conditions. The team, featuring key players like Jos Buttler, Sai Sudharsan, and Glenn Phillips, struggled to accelerate in the final five overs. Gill noted that the pitch had enough in it for a much bigger total, estimating that a score in the range of 210 to 220 was achievable.
Reflecting on the innings, Gill pointed out that the team kept losing wickets at regular intervals, which disrupted their momentum. He added that while the surface initially offered some resistance, batting became easier as the ball aged, though his side could not take full advantage of the conditions when it mattered most.

In contrast, Punjab Kings capitalised effectively during their chase, with Cooper Connolly delivering a standout performance. The young batter scored a fluent 72, making batting appear effortless on the same pitch and guiding his team to a three-wicket victory. His composure under pressure earned him the Player of the Match award.
Gill also highlighted the impact of weather conditions during the second innings, stating that a light drizzle made the ball wet and improved batting conditions for Punjab Kings. He suggested that the moisture reduced resistance off the pitch, making stroke play easier compared to the first innings.
Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer praised Connolly’s calm approach, noting his ability to handle pressure and play crucial shots at key moments. Connolly, reflecting on his performance, expressed satisfaction with his contribution and credited the team’s relaxed mindset for helping secure a winning start to their campaign.
