Punjab-based Punjab Kings suffered their first defeat of the IPL 2026, but fast-bowling coach James Hopes described the setback as a timely “reality check” rather than a serious concern. Punjab was beaten by Rajasthan Royals in a high-scoring contest, ending their unbeaten run. Despite the disappointment, Hopes maintained that the squad remains confident and capable of responding strongly in the coming matches.
Speaking after the loss, Hopes pointed to the nature of the pitch and conditions, saying the surface heavily favoured batters and made bowling extremely difficult. He explained that fast bowlers especially struggled during the powerplay, where the ball came nicely onto the bat and boundaries flowed freely. According to him, even good deliveries were being punished because of the flat wicket and quick outfield. His remarks suggested that the defeat was influenced as much by conditions as by execution errors from Punjab’s bowling attack.
Hopes also underlined that adaptability is one of the most important qualities for success in the IPL, where teams face different venues, pitches, and match situations throughout the season. He said strong teams are those that quickly read conditions and adjust their plans accordingly. Punjab Kings, he added, believe they have the ability to do exactly that. Rather than overreacting to one result, the coaching group appears focused on learning lessons and improving tactical responses for future matches.

During his comments, Hopes also referred to Royal Challengers Bengaluru as an example of a side that has shown the ability to adapt well to varying match conditions. He noted that Punjab aims to develop a similar level of flexibility and consistency. The mention of RCB highlighted how rival teams are often studied closely in the IPL, with franchises looking to replicate habits that produce sustained success over a long tournament.
Even after losing their unbeaten record, Punjab Kings remain among the stronger teams in the competition and are still well placed in the standings. The squad has shown quality with both bat and ball this season, and one defeat is unlikely to damage overall confidence. Hopes’ response reflected a calm dressing-room mindset, with the team determined to treat the loss as a useful reminder that maintaining standards and adjusting quickly will be essential in the race for playoff qualification.
