Mitchell Starc is set to miss the opening phase of the Indian Premier League 2026, delivering an early setback to Delhi Capitals, who had planned to build their bowling attack around the experienced left-arm pacer.
The update was confirmed by Cricket Australia, which stated that Starc’s availability will depend on his recovery and return-to-play protocols. The veteran fast bowler has had an intense workload over the past year, including a full Ashes series and significant involvement in domestic competitions, prompting a cautious approach to his fitness.
Starc’s absence is particularly impactful for Delhi Capitals because of the role he plays in T20 cricket. Known for his ability to strike early with the new ball and deliver under pressure in the death overs, he provides both control and aggression—qualities that are difficult to replace. The franchise had expected him to lead from the front and set the tone in the initial matches of the season.

Adding to the challenge, fellow Australian quicks Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood are also set to miss the start of the tournament for their respective teams. However, Starc’s absence is seen as more disruptive given Delhi’s reliance on him as their primary strike bowler.
The 36-year-old was signed by Delhi Capitals for ₹11.75 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction and featured in 11 matches last season, picking up 14 wickets. While his economy rate was on the higher side, his ability to deliver in crucial moments and his reputation as a big-match player made him a key asset for the franchise.
With the tournament set to begin soon, Delhi Capitals will now need to rely on their bench strength and alternative pace options to navigate the early stages. Building momentum without their lead pacer will be crucial, especially in a tightly contested league where early wins can shape playoff chances.
The franchise will, however, take some comfort from the fact that Starc’s absence is not expected to be long-term. If his recovery progresses well, his return later in the tournament could provide a timely boost, particularly during the business end of the season when experience and match-winning ability become even more critical.
