The Indian Premier League 2026 season has entered its decisive phase, with the race for playoff qualification intensifying as teams approach the final stretch of league matches. With only a few games remaining for most sides, the traditional benchmark of 16 points once again appears to be the likely cutoff for securing a spot in the top four.
Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru are currently in strong positions at the top of the table, needing just two more wins each to confirm qualification. Both teams also benefit from strong net run rates (NRR), which could prove decisive if multiple teams finish on equal points during the closing stages of the tournament.
Teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals remain well-placed in the playoff race, with both sides likely to qualify if they win two of their remaining matches. However, Gujarat Titans face a slightly tougher path due to a negative NRR, meaning they may need at least three wins to avoid relying on other results.

Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings find themselves under pressure, currently sitting outside the top four. With 10 points so far, CSK will likely need to win at least three of their remaining four games to reach the 16-point mark and stay competitive in the qualification race.
Further down the table, Delhi Capitals are in a must-win situation, requiring victories in all their remaining matches while also improving a poor NRR. Kolkata Knight Riders face an even steeper challenge, needing to win all five of their remaining games to have a realistic chance of progressing.
At the bottom, Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants are nearly out of contention, with limited maximum points and unfavourable NRR scenarios. As the tournament heads toward its conclusion, every match now carries significant weight, with qualification hopes depending not only on wins but also on margins of victory.
