Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has delivered a sharp criticism of Babar Azam, claiming that the star batter was “mentally unfit” to be selected for the recent One Day International series between Pakistan national cricket team and Bangladesh national cricket team. The comments came shortly after Pakistan selectors revealed that Babar had been dealing with injuries during the team’s recent international commitments. Basit’s remarks have sparked debate among fans and analysts about the form and readiness of one of Pakistan’s most prominent cricketers.
The controversy emerged after Pakistan selector Aaqib Javed disclosed that Babar Azam and fellow batter Fakhar Zaman had been carrying injuries during the team’s campaign in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Responding to those comments, Basit argued that Babar did not appear to be physically struggling on the field. Instead, he suggested that the former Pakistan captain was mentally uncomfortable, particularly with batting at the No. 4 position in the lineup.
During a discussion on his YouTube channel, Basit said Babar was physically fit but not in the right mental state to perform effectively. He expressed hope that the batter would not be selected for upcoming matches until he regained confidence and clarity in his role within the team. Basit’s remarks were widely circulated on social media, where cricket fans and experts debated the criticism directed at one of Pakistan’s leading players.

Basit also directed strong criticism toward Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson, accusing him of exceeding his authority in team selection decisions. The former cricketer questioned the coach’s involvement in choosing the squad, arguing that selection responsibilities should rest primarily with the designated selection committee. His comments reflected ongoing discussions within Pakistan’s cricket community regarding the structure and decision-making processes behind the national team.
Meanwhile, the ODI series concluded with Bangladesh securing a 2–1 victory over Pakistan. The decisive third match was played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, where Bangladesh clinched an 11-run win to seal the series. Opener Tanzid Hasan scored a maiden century, helping the hosts post a competitive total of 290 for five in their allotted 50 overs.
Pakistan’s chase saw several early wickets fall before a fighting century from Salman Ali Agha briefly revived hopes of victory. However, Bangladesh’s bowling attack, led by Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman, eventually sealed the win as Pakistan were bowled out for 279. The result handed Bangladesh a memorable series triumph and added further pressure on Pakistan’s team management as discussions around player form and selection continue.
