Long before the Indian Premier League transformed Twenty20 cricket, an 18-year-old Virat Kohli made his domestic T20 debut for Delhi in an experimental tournament organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The match against Himachal Pradesh was played at the Indira Gandhi Stadium before a sparse crowd, far removed from the packed venues Kohli would later command.

Delhi lost early wickets after being asked to bat on a difficult surface, bringing Kohli to the crease at No. 3. Facing experienced domestic bowlers, he produced a controlled innings of 35 runs from 26 deliveries. Instead of relying on aggressive hitting, Kohli rotated the strike, found gaps and ran hard between the wickets to keep Delhi’s innings moving.

His approach offered an early indication of the adaptability that would later define his career. While several young batters were attempting to clear the boundary regularly, Kohli recognised that the challenging pitch demanded calculated stroke play. He finished as Delhi’s second-highest scorer, behind opening batter Shikhar Dhawan, who made 38 from 28 deliveries.

Despite contributions from Dhawan and Kohli, Delhi were dismissed for 136. Himachal Pradesh bowler Nischal Gaur delivered the decisive spell, claiming five wickets for 28 runs from his four overs. His performance prevented Delhi from building partnerships or accelerating effectively during the latter stages of their innings.

Himachal Pradesh chased the 137-run target in 19 overs while losing only three wickets. Captain Sandeep Sharma led the response with 45 runs from 44 deliveries, guiding the home team to victory. Although Kohli’s debut ended in defeat, his methodical innings stood out on a surface where most Delhi batters struggled to score freely.

A year later, during the player selection process for the inaugural IPL season in 2008, Delhi Daredevils chose bowler Pradeep Sangwan instead of local prospect Kohli. Royal Challengers Bangalore subsequently recruited the young batter, beginning an association that would shape his professional career and the franchise’s identity. His little-watched debut in Una consequently became an early chapter in one of modern cricket’s most celebrated journeys.
