The Zimbabwe national cricket team pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, defeating the Australia national cricket team by 23 runs in their Group B clash at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Friday. The victory significantly boosted Zimbabwe’s chances of advancing in the tournament.
Batting first after being put in, Zimbabwe posted a competitive 169/2 in their 20 overs. Brian Bennett anchored the innings with a composed 64, guiding the side to what turned out to be a match-winning total. Notably, it became the lowest T20 World Cup first-innings score by a team that lost two or fewer wickets yet still secured victory.
Australia’s chase got off to a disastrous start as Zimbabwe’s pace attack struck early. Blessing Muzarabani led the charge with four wickets, while Brad Evans picked up three, reducing Australia to deep trouble in the powerplay. Key batters Cameron Green and Tim David were dismissed for ducks, putting the second-ranked side on the back foot.

A brief recovery attempt came through Matt Renshaw, who scored 65 off 44 balls, and Glenn Maxwell, who added 31 off 32. However, Zimbabwe maintained pressure with disciplined bowling and fielding, eventually bowling Australia out for 146 in 19.3 overs to seal a memorable win.
The result lifts Zimbabwe to second place in the Group B standings and puts them within touching distance of the Super Eights. Australia, meanwhile, faces mounting pressure ahead of its next fixture, with another defeat potentially jeopardizing its progress in the tournament.
Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza later indicated that his on-field discomfort was due to cramps and not a serious injury, expressing confidence in the team’s momentum as they prepare for their upcoming matches.
