Indian steeplechase star Avinash Sable, the Asian Games champion and national record holder, suffered a minor knee injury after a fall during the Monaco Diamond League’s 3000m event on July 11, 2025, his coach Amrish Kumar confirmed on July 13. The 30-year-old stumbled at a water jump while avoiding another runner, clutching his lower thigh and failing to finish the race. Kumar, speaking from the Army Sports Institute in Pune, assured that Sable will recover in one to two weeks with rest, downplaying concerns.
The incident occurred when Sable, trying to protect a competitor who lost balance post-jump, fell himself. “Such things happen in races,” Kumar noted, emphasizing the injury’s minor nature. Sable, who transitioned from cross-country to steeplechase under Kumar’s guidance in 2017, holds a national record of 8:09.91. His Diamond League season has been tough, with a 13th-place finish in Xiamen, eighth in Keqiao, and the Monaco DNF, making qualification for the August 27-28 Zurich Finals unlikely.
Sable’s focus now shifts to the World Championships in Tokyo (September 13-21), for which he has qualified. The Sports Ministry has approved his training in Colorado Springs from July 15 to September 3, ensuring he’s primed for the global stage.
