Australia’s chances of qualifying for cricket’s return at the 2028 Olympics remain largely intact despite their disappointing early exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The Mitchell Marsh-led side suffered back-to-back defeats to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, marking their first group-stage elimination in 17 years and raising concerns about the impact on their Olympic hopes. However, current ICC rankings suggest the setback is unlikely to cost them a spot.
Cricket is set to return to the Olympic programme at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, where the T20 format will be played for the first time in 126 years. While the qualification pathway for the men’s competition has not yet been officially confirmed, reports indicate the six-team event will likely include host nation USA and the top-ranked sides from each ICC regional division. Australia, currently ranked third in the ICC T20I standings, remain the leading team from the Oceania region ahead of New Zealand.
Despite Australia’s early World Cup exit, the mathematics of the ICC ranking system heavily favours them. The rankings, designed by statistician David Kendix, are based on a weighted formula that factors in opposition strength and match recency. At present, Australia hold an eight-point ratings advantage over New Zealand, with their tally derived from 48 matches compared to the Black Caps’ 62. Even if Australia lose their remaining fixture against Oman, their rating would only marginally decline.

For New Zealand to overtake Australia, they would need an extraordinary surge in ranking points through the remainder of the tournament. Projections indicate that even a perfect run — including wins over major opponents in the Super 8, semifinal and final — would still leave them short of Australia’s projected rating. As a result, barring an unexpected shift in the rankings methodology or results beyond current forecasts, Australia’s path to the 2028 Olympic cricket event appears secure for now.
