Veteran Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon has delivered a blunt message ahead of the third Ashes Test, insisting that "no one has a given right to be selected" following his surprise omission from the second Test against England. The 38-year-old, who was overlooked for the day-night match at the Gabba despite being fully fit, stated he has nothing to prove and remains focused on contributing when called upon. Lyon is widely expected to return to the playing XI for the upcoming Adelaide Test.
Lyon's exclusion from the second Test marked a rare occurrence, as his previous omission while fit dated back 12 years to a pink-ball Test against the West Indies in July. He featured in the series opener at Perth but was left out at the Gabba, where Australia opted for a different bowling combination. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Lyon emphasised the competitive nature of selection, acknowledging the depth in Australia's spin department and the team's strategy under captain Pat Cummins.
The spinner, who has taken over 500 Test wickets, expressed no bitterness over the decision, highlighting his long career and understanding of team dynamics. "I've been around long enough to know that no one has a given right to be selected," Lyon said, adding that his preparation remains unchanged regardless of selection status. His comments reflect the ruthless selection policy that has characterised Australia's recent success in Test cricket.

As the Ashes series intensifies, Lyon's potential recall for the Adelaide Oval Test—known for favouring spin—could prove pivotal. The venue has historically offered assistance to off-spinners, and Lyon's extensive experience in home conditions makes him a valuable asset. With the series finely poised, Australia's management will weigh options carefully as they aim to regain momentum against a resilient England side.
