India captain Shreyas Iyer identified heavy dew and the batting-friendly surface as major factors behind his team's inability to defend 249 runs against the West Indies in the second T20 International in Ranchi on Friday. Despite posting an imposing total of 249 for five, India suffered an eight-wicket defeat as the visitors completed a remarkable chase of 250 with nine balls remaining. Iyer acknowledged that the conditions made life difficult for the bowlers, leaving little room for error against an aggressive batting line-up.
India's innings was built on valuable contributions from Sanju Samson and the middle order, allowing the hosts to set a challenging target. However, the West Indies responded with an outstanding batting performance led by captain Shai Hope, who remained unbeaten on 102 off just 45 deliveries. His aggressive approach put India under pressure and helped the visitors maintain the required scoring rate despite losing early wickets.
Iyer explained that the dew significantly influenced the contest, making it difficult to determine a par score on the surface. He noted that even a total of 249 proved insufficient, with the West Indies reaching the target comfortably. The Indian captain also pointed out that the pitch offered limited margin for error, as deliveries that missed their intended length could be punished by the batters. These conditions complicated India's efforts to contain the opposition during the second innings.

Hope received excellent support from Sherfane Rutherford, who scored an explosive 84 off 37 balls. Their partnership shifted the momentum decisively towards the West Indies after India had made an early breakthrough. The pair combined power hitting with effective shot selection, putting the Indian bowling attack under sustained pressure. Their performance helped the visitors register one of the highest successful run chases in men's T20 International cricket.
Despite the defeat, Iyer praised the performances of India's batters and acknowledged the quality of the West Indies' response. He expressed satisfaction with the contributions from Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, while also recognising the importance of Mayank Yadav's bowling effort. Mayank claimed three top-order wickets, giving India an early advantage before the visitors recovered through their middle-order partnership.
The result levelled the five-match T20I series at 1-1, putting both teams on equal footing ahead of the third match. India's inability to defend such a substantial total will raise questions about its bowling execution under challenging conditions. For the West Indies, Hope's century and Rutherford's attacking innings provided a significant boost, demonstrating how effective partnerships and calculated aggression can overcome even a formidable target.
