India ended the opening day of the one-off Test against Afghanistan in a commanding position, thanks to impressive batting performances from captain Shubman Gill and senior opener KL Rahul. The hosts crossed the 350-run mark in the final session, placing themselves firmly in control after a largely dominant day with the bat. Afghanistan's bowlers struggled to make consistent breakthroughs as India capitalised on favorable batting conditions.
The foundation of India's innings was laid by KL Rahul, who produced a well-crafted century and guided the team through the early stages. He shared a significant 139-run partnership with Sai Sudharsan, who narrowly missed out on a maiden Test hundred after scoring 81 runs. Their stand helped India build momentum and ensured that Afghanistan remained under pressure for most of the first two sessions.
After Rahul's dismissal, skipper Shubman Gill took charge of the innings and continued to frustrate the Afghan bowling attack. Displaying patience, solid technique and calculated aggression, Gill reached a deserved century in the final session. His innings highlighted his growing responsibility as captain and provided further stability to India's batting effort as the team pushed towards a formidable first-innings total.

Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant added further momentum late in the day with his trademark attacking style. Pant kept the scoreboard moving at a brisk pace and entertained spectators with a succession of aggressive strokes, including several sixes. His positive approach ensured that Afghanistan were unable to regain control during the final phase of play, while also bringing him close to a half-century by stumps.
The match also witnessed debut appearances on both sides. India handed a Test cap to spinner Manav Suthar, while Afghanistan included spinner Nangeyalia Kharote for his maiden Test appearance. The selection of young players reflected both teams' efforts to build depth and provide opportunities at the highest level of the game.
At the close of play, India had strengthened their grip on the contest with a strong batting display and only a handful of wickets lost. With Gill still at the crease after his century and Pant continuing to score freely, the hosts will aim to extend their advantage on the second day and put Afghanistan under greater pressure with a massive first-innings score.
