Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India supports a safe and sustainable space domain rooted in international law, emphasising that the benefits of space exploration are vast while the responsibility to protect the domain is shared by all nations. Virtually addressing the International Space Summit in Paris, Modi also invited France and other countries to become “co-travellers” in India's next generation of space research and exploration.

Modi said India's approach to space activities is based on the principle of responsible and peaceful cooperation. He stressed the importance of ensuring that the space domain remains safe and sustainable and said international law should provide the foundation for activities beyond Earth. The prime minister also underlined the role of scientific data, saying it should contribute to common objectives through openness and integrity. He said India's space programme reflects these principles in its expanding engagement with the global space community.

The prime minister linked India's space policy to the traditional philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”, which means “One Earth, One Family, One Future”. Modi said this spirit should extend beyond the planet as humanity's activities in space continue to grow. He pointed out that space, which for centuries inspired human imagination, has increasingly become an important part of everyday life on Earth. From supporting critical services to enabling technologies that can help save lives, space capabilities now have a direct impact on societies.

Highlighting India's growing role in the sector, Modi said the technology developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), along with its international partnerships, serves not only India's interests but also the wider world. He said India's space journey has increasingly involved cooperation and the sharing of capabilities, reflecting the country's commitment to using space technology for broader public benefit. The prime minister's remarks came as countries continue to expand their space programmes while also discussing the need for responsible conduct and long-term sustainability.

Modi also credited generations of Indian scientists, engineers and technicians for building ISRO's reputation and the global confidence associated with India's space programme. He said their sustained efforts and dedication had helped establish India's capabilities in space research and technology. According to Modi, the progress achieved by the country's space sector is the result of years of work by teams that have continued to develop and deploy advanced technologies for scientific and practical applications.

Calling for greater international cooperation, Modi encouraged France and other nations to partner with India in its next phase of space research. His appeal comes as India seeks to deepen collaboration in advanced space technologies and scientific exploration. He said the country's future space journey should be accompanied by international partnerships and shared responsibility. Reiterating India's commitment to a safe and sustainable space environment, Modi said the promise offered by space is “infinite”, while the responsibility for protecting it remains collective.
