Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has hinted that mistakes on his part may have contributed to the retirements of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket. Both stalwarts announced their decisions to step away from the longest format during Gambhir’s first year as coach, just ahead of India’s series against England. Gambhir acknowledged that managing relationships with senior players is a complex task and suggested that his approach might not have always been perfect, but emphasized that he acted with honesty and intent.

Speaking at the Revsportz Trailblazers Enclave, Gambhir addressed media speculation about a possible rift with Kohli and Sharma following a disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign. He stated, “I am human and I should be allowed to make mistakes just like anyone else. Players should be allowed to make mistakes. I must have made mistakes in the last 18 months.” He added that wrong decisions made with the right intent are acceptable, whereas actions with wrong intent are not, highlighting his philosophy on leadership and accountability.

Gambhir was specifically asked about social media reports implying tension between him and the senior players. He responded candidly, explaining that honesty and transparency guide his interactions in the dressing room. “Till the time I am doing everything with honesty and I am being honest to everyone in that dressing room—from the masseur to the assistant coach—I think I am doing a fair job with my position,” he said. The coach stressed that external noise, trolling, and speculation should not overshadow the collective effort of the team.
