Legendary former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni took to social media to congratulate the Indian cricket team after their emphatic T20 World Cup 2026 triumph over New Zealand Cricket Team at the Narendra Modi Stadium. India secured a historic 96-run victory, becoming the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times.
Dhoni’s post was rare, as the veteran cricketer is not very active on social media. While congratulating the entire squad, he specifically praised head coach Gautam Gambhir, noting his leadership and intensity in the dressing room. Dhoni also highlighted star pacer Jasprit Bumrah with a nod to his exceptional bowling, referring to him as a “champion bowler”.
The post read: “History gets created at Ahmedabad, big congratulations to the team and support staff and to all the fans of Indian Cricket Team worldwide. Such a pleasure to see all of you play. Coach Sahab’s smile looks great on you; intensity with smile is a killer combo, very well done. Enjoy guys (BUMRAH ke baare mein kuch na likhoon tou hi acha hai. CHAMPION BOWLER).”

Meanwhile, Gambhir reflected on the victory, emphasising that his accountability lies with the players, not social media or external critics. He dedicated India’s successful T20 World Cup title defence to cricketing stalwarts Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, praising Dravid for building the team foundation and Laxman for nurturing talent at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. Gambhir also thanked chief selector Ajit Agarkar and ICC Chairman Jay Shah, acknowledging their support during challenging periods in his coaching tenure.
India’s victory marks the third ICC title in three years, following the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados and the Champions Trophy win over New Zealand, cementing the team’s dominance in global white-ball cricket.
