Former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga has publicly extended his support to Pakistan’s former Prime Minister and 1992 World Cup-winning captain, Imran Khan, raising serious concerns about the cricketer-politician’s health. Imran, who has been held in solitary confinement since September 2023, reportedly suffers from severe vision loss, with nearly 85% vision lost in one eye. Ranatunga appealed to the Pakistan government to provide him with urgent medical care.
Highlighting Imran Khan’s contributions to cricket and national pride, Ranatunga described him as an inspiration to millions, both as a cricketer and a politician. “He transcended cricket and politics. He was a symbol of hope, a patriot who carried his nation’s dreams on his shoulders, and an icon respected beyond Pakistan’s borders,” he said in a statement.
The Sri Lankan cricketing great also emphasized the need for humane treatment, urging authorities to prioritize compassion and dignity despite the ongoing political and legal circumstances surrounding Imran. Ranatunga said, “Before the politician and before the cricketer, there was Imran Khan—a human being deserving empathy, compassion, and humanity.”

Ranatunga’s call follows a joint statement earlier this week by 14 former international cricket captains, including Indian legends Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, who demanded “fair and humane treatment” for Imran Khan. These appeals underline growing concern among the global cricketing community over the former Prime Minister’s deteriorating health.
Imran’s prolonged confinement and alleged neglect of his medical complaints have drawn attention to human rights and prison standards in Pakistan. Observers note that sustained international attention may increase pressure on authorities to address his medical needs promptly.
Ranatunga concluded with a heartfelt message urging the Pakistan government to recognize Imran first as a human being. “It is imperative that compassion prevails, and proper care and fairness are extended to a man who has dedicated his life to his country,” he added, emphasizing empathy over politics.
