The newly appointed Youth and Sports State Minister Aminul Haque has announced that the Bangladesh government will fast-track the legal cases involving former cricket captains Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, signalling an intent to clear their names so the two could return to Bangladesh and resume involvement in national cricket.
Addressing reporters in Dhaka following his inauguration as part of the new government formed after the February 12 general elections, Haque said authorities will review and handle “matters concerning Shakib and Mashrafe” with “flexibility and tolerance” to expedite their ability to come back home. He reiterated that the cases, which include serious charges filed after the ouster of the previous Awami League regime in August 2024, should be resolved swiftly so that the players can return to Bangladesh cricket.
Shakib, widely regarded as one of Bangladesh’s greatest all-rounders, and Mashrafe — a veteran former fast bowler and leader — have been living abroad since allegations and legal complaints emerged in the wake of the political upheaval. Both men served as members of parliament for the now-displaced Awami League before the change in government, and have faced multiple cases including murder charges, corruption allegations and other legal actions that have prevented their return.

Haque, who previously captained the Bangladesh national football team, suggested that working with sports and legal authorities “at the state level” could help pave the way for a resolution. He also signalled plans to engage with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and other stakeholders to restore stability and unity within Bangladesh’s cricket administration.
The announcement marks a notable shift in tone from the interim attitude toward the two cricketers. Under the earlier administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, statements indicated that Shakib would not be permitted to wear the national colours again, and legal pressures had stalled any prospects of their return.
Supporters and cricket commentators have reacted with mixed views. Some have welcomed the prospect of Bangladesh’s most iconic players returning home, arguing their experience could benefit the national side, while others have stressed that due legal process and accountability must not be overshadowed by sentiment.
Haque also touched on broader sports diplomacy, indicating the government’s intention to improve relations with neighbouring countries like India and align administrative processes with ICC regulations as part of its overall strategy for Bangladesh sports.
