BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar has taken a cautious stance on discussions surrounding a potential early India debut for 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, emphasising that the youngster will be eased into the system through the established pathway before any senior call-up is considered.
Sooryavanshi has recently attracted widespread attention for his performances at the junior and franchise level, with several former cricketers and commentators suggesting that he could be fast-tracked into India’s T20I setup. However, Agarkar indicated that the selection committee is committed to a structured progression model rather than immediate elevation based on potential alone.
The youngster’s inclusion in the India A one-day squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka in June has been viewed as a significant step in his development. The move has also reduced the likelihood of him being considered for the Ireland tour, where he was reportedly in contention for selection for a limited-overs series.

Speaking at the announcement of India’s squads for the series against Afghanistan, Agarkar stressed that while the selectors are impressed with Sooryavanshi’s talent, they are mindful of balancing expectations and development. He pointed to the presence of established young players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, noting that multiple performers are already competing for similar roles in the national setup.
Agarkar reiterated that India’s selection policy prioritises exposure through India A tours and domestic performance before senior international opportunities are awarded. He added that the India A assignment would provide Sooryavanshi with valuable experience against higher-level opposition, allowing him to further refine his game in competitive conditions.
While the excitement around Sooryavanshi continues to grow, the selection committee’s position remains clear: the teenager’s progression will be gradual, and his senior India debut will depend on consistent performance and readiness rather than accelerated promotion.
